Dealership stickers serve as a form of free advertising. They typically display the dealership’s name, logo, and location. Some are simple decals, while others are laser-cut stickers with individual letters. While the dealership stickers are not permanent, they can become difficult to remove over time, especially if exposed to prolonged sunlight and weathering.

This blog explains simple steps to remove stickers from cars without damaging the paint.

Step-by-Step Guide to Removing a Dealer Sticker

What Tools Do You Need?

Heat-Based Tools: Hairdryer vs. Heat Gun

A hairdryer provides gentle heat that softens the adhesive without risking damage to the paint. A heat gun, if used improperly, can overheat the area and compromise the vehicle’s finish.

Adhesive Removers: Which One Works Best?

Common adhesive removers include 3M Adhesive Remover, Goo Gone, and WD-40. These products help dissolve the adhesive without harming the paint when used correctly.

Plastic Razor Blades vs. Credit Cards: Which is Safer?

A plastic razor blade or an expired credit card is ideal for lifting the sticker without scratching the surface. Metal objects should never be used, as they can leave permanent scratches.

Safety Tips: Using microfiber cloths instead of abrasive materials helps protect the car’s finish. A gentle approach ensures the removal process does not create new imperfections on the paint surface.

Step 1: Clean the Area to Prevent Scratches

Before starting, wash the area with car soap and water. Dirt and debris can cause micro-scratches if rubbed into the paint during removal.

Step 2: Apply Heat to Loosen the Adhesive

Use a hairdryer set to high heat, and hold it four to six inches away from the sticker for about one to two minutes. This softens the adhesive, making removal easier.

Step 3: Gently Peel Off the Sticker

Once the adhesive has softened, begin peeling from one corner. If it does not lift easily, use a plastic razor blade or credit card to help separate it from the paint.

Step 4: Remove Leftover Adhesive Without Harming Paint

If residue remains, apply more cleaning solution and allow it to sit for a few minutes before wiping the area clean.

Step 5: Wash and Protect the Paint Surface

Once the sticker and adhesive are removed, wash the area again with car soap and apply a layer of wax to restore protection.

Do Dealerships Remove Their Stickers Upon Request?

Some dealerships will remove their branding before handing over the car to you, but many do not. If a sticker is present, it is up to the owner to remove it carefully.

What NOT to Do When Removing a Dealer Sticker

Do not use metal blades or sharp tools

Using a metal razor blade or knife can permanently scratch the paint, leading to costly repairs.

Do not peel stickers without softening the adhesive

Forcing a sticker off without softening the glue first can result in tearing, making removal more difficult and leaving behind excess adhesive.

Removing a dealership sticker from a car is a straightforward process when using the right techniques. Make sure to clean and protect the area after decal removal.
