Vancouver, BC, is not only the third-largest city in Canada but also one of the top five rainiest cities in the country. With an average of 57.3 inches (1,457 mm) of rainfall annually, cars in the region are constantly exposed to moisture, which can lead to paint deterioration, rust formation, and mold growth without immediate signs.

Unlike a sudden downpour that dries up quickly, Vancouver’s prolonged rainy season creates the perfect conditions for water damage, especially in cities like Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and Victoria, where similar weather patterns exist. When moisture lingers on the exterior, seeps into small crevices, or accumulates inside the cabin, it accelerates wear and tear that could shorten your car’s lifespan.

As one of the best car detailing services in Vancouver, we have prepared a guide for you to protect your car from Vancouver’s harsh rainfall.

Maintain a Hydrophobic Barrier

The easiest way to safeguard your car’s paintwork, glass, and trim in a rainy city like Vancouver is by applying hydrophobic coatings. Unlike standard waxes, ceramic coatings form a semi-permanent shield, causing water to bead and roll off instead of lingering on the surface. This also prevents oxidation, water spotting, and dirt accumulation, which are common issues for car owners in damp climates.

Even without ceramic coatings, applying synthetic sealants or wax every one to two months provides an additional layer of protection. These coatings not only repel moisture but also reduce the risk of contaminants embedding into the paint.

Protecting Against Rust

While most cars come with factory rust protection, constant exposure to rain can cause corrosion, especially on the undercarriage, wheel walls, and door edges.

Many people associate rust with winter road salt, but continuous moisture can be just as damaging!

To minimize oxidation and protect your car against rust for the long term, regular undercarriage cleaning should be a part of your car cleaning routine. Cleaning the undercarriage regularly removes built-up grime that traps moisture against metal parts.

Applying a rust-proofing treatment or an oil-based undercoating provides an extra layer of protection, especially for cars that spend a lot of time parked outdoors. Small paint chips should also be addressed as soon as possible, as exposed metal can start rusting within weeks.

Interior Moisture Control

As exterior, your car’s interior is also at equal risk of damage due to excess rain. The moisture buildup in the car interior can lead to mold growth, foggy windows, and musty odors. Additionally, cars with fabric seats and carpets absorb moisture easily, especially when wet clothing or shoes bring water inside. Over time, humidity can cause air vents to develop mold, making the cabin air feel damp and stale.

Using moisture absorbers or silica gel packs inside the car helps regulate humidity levels. If a car sits for long periods, keeping the windows open on dry days allows trapped moisture to escape (only if parked in a safe place).

Check for leaks around door seals, sunroof drains, and trunk liners, as even minor leaks can lead to hidden water damage.

Clean Windshields and Mirrors

Excess rainfall in Vancouver often leads to reduced visibility which makes it harder to navigate the traffic safely. So for your safety, you should keep the windshields, side windows, and mirrors streak-free to avoid glaze and water buildup that can distort your view.

Additionally, consider replacing your wiper blades every six months as they tend to wear out faster in wet climates.

Apply a rain-repellent treatment to glass surfaces so water beads up and rolls off instead of spreading into a blurry film. Keep defoggers running and air circulation balanced to prevent condensation from fogging up interior windows.

Mindful Parking

Getting a perfect parking spot is not easy, but the place where you park your car plays a big role in how much rain exposure your car gets. While garages or covered parking spots are ideal, they aren’t always an option in a city where many people live in apartments or park on the street.

Avoid parking under trees where falling leaves, tree sap, and bird droppings can mix with rainwater and create stubborn stains on the paint.

Instead, park on a slightly inclined surface to allow water to drain away from the car instead of pooling around the tires and lower body panels.

If covered parking isn’t available, using a water-resistant car cover can help limit direct exposure.
