8 Car Detailing Mistakes To Avoid

Detailing your car by yourself? Here's some common car detailing mistakes to avoid to keep your car looking fresh and new for a long haul!

While cleaning your car, even a small detailing mistake can lead to lasting damage and costly repairs. From choosing the wrong cleaning products to skipping some important cleaning steps, many car owners unknowingly shorten the lifespan of their car. The best way to maintain your car for the long term is either to book a professional detailing service or take care of every small detail if you are cleaning your car by yourself.

To help you avoid common pitfalls, here is a list of auto detailing mistakes you should steer clear of when cleaning your car:

Using Bleach or Harsh Chemicals

Bleach is often known as the most powerful cleaning agent in the household, but it should never be used while cleaning a car. The corrosive nature of bleach can permanently damage sensitive interior materials like microsuede or fabric upholstery. Additionally, bleach can also leave unsightly stains and create strong odors that are hard to remove.

Always check the ingredients of your cleaning products and avoid anything with bleach. Look for pH-neutral car cleaning products that are specifically formulated for automotive use. These products are designed to clean effectively without compromising the integrity of your car’s surfaces.

Using Ammonia Based Cleaners

Household glass cleaners always seem effective and convenient but regular glass cleaners contain ammonia which can cause more harm than good.

Ammonia can degrade window tints, damage touchscreens, and create unpleasant odors if it drips onto upholstery.

Instead, choose ammonia-based glass cleaners that are gentle yet effective. These products are safe for tinted windows and sensitive electronic screens, ensuring a spotless interior without the risk of damage.

Using Regular Towels or Your Old Tshirts

In my years as a professional car detailer, one of the most frequent mistakes I’ve come across is car owners using regular towels (even old t-shirts!) to clean their cars. These materials can leave scratches, lint, and streaks on the delicate surfaces of your car.

The safest way to prevent these scratches while cleaning is to use microfiber towels that are highly absorbent and gentle on surfaces.

Using Alcohol-based Products in Leather Upholstery

Many people want leather seats for their cars, but cleaning a leather car seat is not as easy as it sounds. They require special care to maintain their quality and the use of alcohol-based cleaners can strip away the protective urethane coating on leather, leaving it exposed to cracks, fading, and hardening.

To keep leather upholstery looking and feeling like new, use dedicated leather cleaners that nourish and protect the material. These products are specifically designed to preserve the softness and durability of both real and faux leather.

Using Wrong Detailing Brushes

Detailing brushes are the most important tools to clean your car, but the wrong use of these types of brushes can cause scratches and damage to your car.

I have seen many car owners using household brushes, even toothbrushes with abrasive bristles to clean their cars. This can leave unsightly marks on car surfaces, especially on sensitive materials like leather or soft plastics.

Instead, choose professional-grade detailing brushes with soft, non-abrasive bristles. These brushes are designed to clean every nook and cranny without causing scratches, ensuring a perfect finish for your car’s interior.

Detailing Under Sun

While it might seem like a sunny day is perfect for car detailing, working under direct sunlight can lead to faster drying of cleaning products, causing streaks and water spots. Additionally, intense heat can make certain chemicals react unpredictably, potentially damaging your car’s surfaces.

Whenever possible, detail your car in a shaded area or during cooler parts of the day. This ensures that cleaning products work as intended, leaving a streak-free finish.

Neglecting the Engine Bay

While many car owners focus on cleaning the exterior and interior, the engine bay often remains uncleaned. Neglecting the engine bay can lead to dirt, grease, and debris accumulating over time, which may hinder performance and even cause long-term damage.

Cleaning the engine bay requires care and the right approach. Avoid using high-pressure water, as it can damage sensitive components. Instead, use a degreaser specifically designed for engine cleaning and soft brushes to gently remove grime.

Skipping Wax and Protective Coatings

Your car’s paint does more than make it look good, it also acts as a shield against environmental damage. Skipping wax or protective coatings leaves the surface vulnerable to harmful elements like UV rays, dirt, and moisture, which can lead to fading, oxidation, and even rust over time.

Applying a high-quality wax or ceramic coating creates a protective layer that locks in your car’s shine while repelling dirt and water. It also makes future cleaning easier by preventing contaminants from sticking to the surface.
